This is useful because you get an idea of the problems that managers and engineers faced and the solutions they found. It also gives insight in the long term trends in history of manufacturing, and what has been discovered. This can be easily overlooked in a science that seems to be ruled by the fashion of the day and management hypes, and three letter words. In following chapters the book explains some concepts very well, such as MRP, KANBAN and CONWIP and their differences. It is done in such a way that it provides a deeper understanding of manufacturing. It adds in this way to your domain knowledge. But this not the reason you should buy this book. Key insights are gained in the chapter that describe the relation between Wip, Cycle Time and Throughput, the chapters that describe the influence of variability on production performance and the chapter about waiting lines (queue's). Every manager should read read this and understand it, because with this knowledge a lot of problems in manufacturing can be diagnosed and solved. With this knowlwdge a manager is able to understand the consequences of his actions on the daily output of his plant. The book is not an easy read, the book contains many equations, but in the end it is more rewarding because it contributes to deeper knowledge and understanding.
